We are planning to move to India for good. Can someone please advise whats the fastest way to get the Indian visa (Houston) since I have heard some long delays these days to get it.

I became a US citizen in Sept'10.
Option 1) Apply for surrender certificate and PIO card at the same time from US. Fly to India and then apply for an OCI card from India.

Option 2)Apply for surrender certificate and OCI card at the same time from US.

Option 3) Apply for surrender certificate first, then apply for an Indian Visa.
Fly to India and then apply for a OCI card from there.

Any advise?

Thank you for taking time and reading it.

abadabajabba,
I haven't done this in Houston, but have gone through this in DC.

If you have a family/medical emergency and have some supporting document (Doctor letter et al), you can get same day Entry Visa from your consulate. You would still be routed via Travisa outsourcing services.
Houston site has this information http://www.cgihouston.org/visanew.html
You will be applying for Entry Visa through http://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com.

You should contact the Travisa Outsourcing folks (Email, Phone) and inquire about the local appointment and paperwork procedures. Their site is pretty good with instructions, but if you need more details, they are good in responding to emails.

They will accept the Renunciation Certificate (SC) paperwork along with your Entry Visa application and get it done smoothly.

You can use the SC for your future PIO/OCI paperwork.

If you are thinking of OCI in India, please check

Not sure about your plans on taking stuff from the US to India during this move. Check http://www.r2iclubforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1430-MT-Transfer-of-Residence-Rules/page8 on certain things you will need to pay attention to.

If you have a bit more time in your hand, it will be much easier to get the OCI done here rather than in India.... atleast you will have a good number of people :):):)(in the forum) to share your good:)/bad:( days with the consulate folks....

If there is an emergency due to which you have to travel soon, then you should plan for a quick exit, definitely.

Good luck
