Hi,

Anyone moved from Canada to US after obtaining their GC. If so could you share your experience please. Alternatively if you could write to me at sivaguru_r@hotmail.com I would appreciate it.

I have some questions regarding the actual move, the paper work involved. Is it possible to cross border obtain the I-551 stamp on the passport and return back to Canada after a couple of days and then plan the move of the personal belongings ?

Is it mandatory to move with all of your belongings in one move ? Can one move by using UHaul etc... instead of involving professional movers ?

Any input is much appreciated.

Thanks

Moved to US a few years back

I moved to the US from Canada a few years back. We originally drove our car across with some of our belongings. Didn\'t need any paper work at that time.

We moved the rest of our stuff via a moving company two years later, they handled all the paper work and it was very smooth, no problems.

I can\'t see why you would have a problem moving some of the stuff yourself first and then a moving company later. But if you are bringing a U-haul across you need to make sure you have all the paper work required.

One last thing, if you are leasing a car in Canada MAKE SURE you talk to them before bringing it across. I didn\'t realize I couldn\'t bring my leased car here and a few months later ended up getting a sudden cal from my leasing company requiring I buy the car outright.

Thank you for sharing the information. I did find out from the US customs website that you can cross the border as a new immigrant and later as a returning resident.

The information w.r.t. a leased car is quite thoughtful. I have a leased vehicle and need to find out alternatives to either take the car with me or see if there is an possible solution.

Thanks

I don\'t think there\'s anyway around having to buy the car. I have another friend who had to do the same thing. The leasing company told me that the reason they do this is that once you take the car out of the country it can affect their legal rights to it and this is why they are so insistent about you purchasing the car. Luckily for me I wasn\'t charged anything for paying off the lease early.

Thanks for the information. I have a pre-paid lease that expires Jan 2003. As such I do not make any monthly payments. If I take the car with me without actually importing it I guess I should not have problems. At the expiration of the lease I can either turn the car back or buy it. However the issue remains in terms of actual plating of the car, the taxes to be paid and obtaining stickers etc...

That shouldn\'t be a problem.

That won\'t be a problem (atleast in CA).
I registered and plated my car while it was still under lease in Canada (didn\'t find out till a year later that I was supposed to payoff the car before leaving Canada).
Anyways when you take it to the DMV they will ask you the blue-book value of it and you will pay registration based upon this amount. Your car registration will show a lien against the car.

Now when you pay off the lease and want the car registered ONLY in your name they will want proof that you have paid the full tax you should have paid on the car, if you didn\'t pay some of the tax (in my case I was not charged tax on the payoff amount) you need to pay the tax here before you can get the lien removed.

If you are going to CA, MAKE sure you get the car registered as soon as you get here, I believe you have 30 days, the fines are horrendous, I believe its a 50% fine for missing by one day.

Cheers
