Hi
I am almost up for naturalization having received my green card in August 2007. I have lived in the Virgin Islands for the last 5 years . I am being relocated to a different state sometime during this year. Being election year i want to apply for my passport . I understand that Naturalization request get expedited fast during election year & i will also be a part of the election process. The thing is i am not sure when i am going to be moved . Should i make my application from the virgin islands or the new place i will be residing out of ?. Also i understand have to wait 3 months before applying from the new place before i make my application. I want to apply right now from the virgin islands but i am not sure if my interview date will come before i move?. My question is should i apply here and then apply for a transfer to the new place for an interview or should i just wait till i move?. If i wait till i move i might not get naturalized this year, not be a part of the election process and will have to wait till next year. Please advise

Thanks

achint

Seeing that you will be moving, there is a very low chance of you being approved before the election. The best bet for you would be if you apply immediately (you should have applied in May) and postpone your move. Since it's the same company (am I right?), you can state in your N400 that you are working in the VI. If you can, use a friend's address there as your address (if you have to vacate your current place). This way, even if you move, you can continue the whole process in the VI. I don't know the processing times, but you could be done by the election. You might have to fly back to and from the VI for your interview and oath.

You don't need a passport to vote, by the way. Once you are a citizen, the registrar of voters will take your word for it when you register. As a USVI resident, though, you can't vote for president. You will have to register in your new place of residence, if you are eligible there.
