Money for spending in India

I am having to visit India in the next few days and it's too late for me to mail a check to my folks in India to deposit in bank there so that I will have Rupees to spend there once I get there.

How much USD cash can I carry on me, so that I can just walk into a bank in India for exchanging them with Rupees? I can buy travellers checks but it will cost some money to me for buying.

I've been to India once only and I entered India with $3000 in cash and TCs, in addition to plastic. I had no issues with either three forms of money.

Use your Debit Card to withdraw money from ATM's in India. They are everywhere and the charges are way too cheap.

If you have to convert your $ to Indian Rs then you will lose money in exchange rates (selling rate will always be higher than buying rate).

In the last ten years or so, I have used my debit card to withdraw money from ATM's and didn't have to carry cash with me at all!

Good luck

Thank you Triple Citizen and howdy_howdy for your helpful suggestions!!!

I will carry cash, TCs, and debit card.

Can one use a regular ATM SAVINGS card to withdraw money in India?

This is a regular savings ATM card and not a debit (or checking) card. My bank has messed up my checking account and my card has become invalid but I do have a regular savings card.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Thanks!
