missing mail - lost green card

I had my family based green card interview on Feb 14 2011 and was approved. I received my approval letter by mail as well as the two 'card production ordered' emails.

I never received my actual card and was finally able to get a USPS tracking number yesterday. According to USPS the mail was delivered on Feb 23 2011 but I never received it.

Has someone been in the same boat? Any suggestions on what I would need to do. I did call USPS and they are trying to find more information about the missing mail.

I did not know that USCIS has started mailing GCs using trackable means. Both my GCs arrived using standard USPS mail.

I never received my actual card and was finally able to get a USPS tracking number yesterday. According to USPS the mail was delivered on Feb 23 2011 but I never received it.

USCIS normally says to wait 30 days to get it. I guess all you can do is wait and hope that you get it soon.

Hi msun79, I'd like to know if you have received your Greencard by now? I was waiting for mine since late March 2011, and I also called up the 1-800 number of USCIS 3 weeks after as stated in the Welcome letter. Anyway, the lady told me to call again by April 12, if I didn't receive my Green Card by that time. I called up April 13, and the man told me he would inform the CSC about my case. About a week after, I got a letter from USCIS stating that their records show that they did send the Green Card last March 12, and they didn't receive any returned greencard as undeliverable under my name. They also gave me the USPS tracking number for my Green Card Mail. I tracked it and it showed that my Green Card did arrive at my local post office, and it was sent out for delivery, but the last status was: "Delivery status not updated as of March 15, 2011, 10:13 pm" I never received it all! Not even a note card telling me that I have mail in the Post office! I went to the post office and nobody knows where my mail is! They are still looking for it up until now, but if they couldn't find it, I would have to apply for a replacement Green card with a FEE of $450! I want to know too if the Green Card mail is a registered priority mail. That way, we can have some claims for our lost green card. It sucks because we get to pay for a REPLACEMENT green card due to a lost initial Green Card which we haven't even had our hands on! It's so frustrating.......!!!!

Also, I'm wondering why USCIS didn't give out the tracking number through USCIS Status Update or through email the day or AT LEAST the day after they mailed the Green Cards! Why wait til we'll have problems before giving it out! We could have tracked the Green Card on our own and might have found it sooner if it was lost! I even found a thread which stated that it shows in their records that the Green cards have been sent but in reality it wasn't even PRODUCED yet!

I really really hope the post office will be able to find my Greencard within their office. I've been there for 3 consecutive days now just trying to get some updates. It seems like the Post office people are just trying to wash their hands off my case. It's like they're avoiding it for some reason. Hello!! It's not just any mail, It's MY GREEN CARD!
I'll bug them if I have to. I have the proof that the mail wasn't delivered to me and it did reach their Local Post Office. So if needed, I would have to seek legal counsel for this.

Hi Jolina,

I did receive my green card. I totally agree that USCIS should email the tracking number right away, why wait till after the mail is lost. Also calling the 1-800 number and getting the tracking number is a pain. I was afraid that I had to wait a long time and pay the 450$ fee for a replacement card.

I did open a issue with the usps folks, you can call the 1 800 usps number and file a missing mail report. I also filed a case with USCIS about never receiving the mail. I live in a high rise and I put a notice in my building to see if someone else accidentally received the mail. Some how the green card eventually returned to USCIS, I was never sure where it was stuck. They then promptly mailed it to me after that.

Also I suggest signing up for email alerts on your case on the uscis site, that way you know immediately if they got the card back.

Best of luck

Thanks for info Msun79! and congratulations for getting your Greencard! :) yep, I do have email alerts with the USCIS site. So far, no new updates if the card was returned. So they actually alert you if they got the green card back, huh? that's good. I was afraid I would just reapply for a new one without knowing if the GC has been returned. I will definitely call the 1-800 USPS number and file that missing mail report. Again, thank you.

Jolina,

Yes I got two mails - one indicating that the card was returned back to them and a second one indicating that it was mailed again. Best of luck. I also tried calling the USPS supervisor who oversees my local post office but I could never find the person. That is another thing you could try, ask your local post office to provide his/her name/number.

Lost green card in the mail
i arrived in the u.s on february, 21st, 2011 but have still not got my green card. I have called and been at the immigration on several times but have still not obtain any results.
Immigration sent me a letter on may 6th to inform me that my card was mailed on 03/11/11, and has since not returned to them. I checked my status online and went to immigration as well but my status showed that on april 1st, immigration sent my green card and was never returned to them. I find these informations contradictory and want to know what i should do. Is there any tracking number that can be given to me so as to help me know where my green card is and how to get it.
However, immigration is telling me to fill a form for a lost or stolen card which goes with a fee of $450.00.
