Minor Citizenship and Name change

My wife and I are US Citizens and we are in the process of filing Citizenship application for our 12 year old son who is a green card holder. I believe that we should use Form N-600. We would like change his name in this process, however Form N-600 does not any option to change the name like in form N-400.

Can any of the members advise us on how to change our son's name while applying for citizenship (N-600)?

Thank you.

Your son is already a citizen. The N-600 is used to obtain a certificate of citizenship to prove this. N-600 is not mandatory, but it might be useful. What most people do is go with the naturalization certificate, green card of the child, birth certificate of the child (I think it needs to be translated), both parents and the child to the post office, and apply for a passport (check passport requirements for minors at http://travel.state.gov passport section).

However, you have the additional complication of the name change. I don't think either N-600 or passport application will help you with this. I am not an expert on this, but I think you should apply in court for a name change, and then use the name change document alongside all the other documents to apply for passports and certificate of citizenship (N-600). I mean that I think it will be better to do the name change first. Other option is obtaining a passport under the current name and then do the name change and apply for N-600 and perhaps replacement of the passport.

Since your son is already a US citizen (by parental lineage) I believe you'll have to go to your local federal court to apply for a name change.
