Minimum/recommended gap between two trips on a Visitor visa

What is the minimum & recommended gap between two trips on a visitor visa -- assuming that the last day of the 1st trip & the first day of the 2nd trip fall in the same calendar year?
 
There is no minimum gap. Recommended gap? Well put it this way. No genuine visitor should spend more than 6 months in the US during any rolling 12 month window.
