Dropping how? You mean not using it in every day life? I have never used my middle name in anything - EVER. Even the taxes I file are based on my first and last name and IRS and SSA have always been able to match my records. Also at work, they have my full name for employment law requirements but my email and public work records are only first and last name because I specifically requested it. All my credit cards, bank statements, etc only use my first and last name.

So in short, it is doable. Your name is your name - you can choose to leave out the middle name. I also have family members that initialize their first name and go by the middle and last name - such as P. John Smith.

What benefit are you trying to gain by dropping it? Is it something horrendous?

You normally don't use it in everyday life anyway. But when you do need to use it, it helps with distinguishing you from somebody else who has the same first and last name as you.

Thanks, i just have a long name...actually two middle names

Ok, many just use initial(s), thats a good way to go.
You always need to book tickets (airline) as the name in passport for Intl travel. In passport you need FULL LEGAL name.

I either use or don't use my middle name/initial sporadically. It's never been questioned. I've been thinking of not using it altogether (where possible) because my name's already long too.

where you need the FULL LEGAL name are:

1. Travel (name as in passport)
2. Official documents (Driver License maybe, maybe not in DL), but PP should have full name, Social security card
3. Middle Initial(s) when you file taxes - just to be consistent
4. Employers will need full legal name (your email can be short), but your official name at employer should be as per Green card or Passport.
5. Misc. govt/official sounding documents

Rest of the places (Renting, phone bills etc) - you can omit Middle name.
