My mother passed away a few days ago.
My father is 81 yrs old and is in pretty good health. I would like to bring him with me atleast for a few weeks if not longer to help him during the grieving process. I do not have any siblings and come from a very small family.
Am in a terrible dilemma ..... He unfortunately is not mentally strong enough to cope with the loss and is taking it quite badly. He is also resisting full time live in help saying he can survive on his own.

Any body have any suggestions on how i may go about doing bringing him to the us . I just became a us citizen six months ago

Grateful for any inputs you may have

Jeemu

Sorry for your loss.

In the near term, if he wants to visit you, he should apply for a visitor visa. Since he is 81 years old he will not be required to be fingerprinted or interviewed. However I think it will be difficult to convince the visa official that he has strong ties to his home country and will return after the visit if he does not work or have significant family or financial founation.

If he wants to permanently live in the US, you should file an immigrant petition for him (form I-130) and request processing in his home country. He will be required to appear for an interview at a US consulate in is home country before the immigrant visa can be issued. Takes 5-7 months end to end.

Neither options are easy and unfortunately it is an extremely difficult time for him in his life. If your personal situation permits, you should spend some time with him in your home country to give him time to go through the grief.

Since you asked about medical insurance, he can only buy a visitor insurance which doesn's cover any pre-existing conditions if he visits you on a visitor visa. He might be able to buy private insurance as a legal permement resident at a significant cost (several hundred dollars per month) from Jan 2014 when the Affordable Care Act kicks in.

Unfortunately it is not possible to expedite the green card process for him. In my personal opinion the best option for you is to get him to visit you for a few months, then together decide if you want to pursue his green card. In that case, you can apply while he is still here as a visitor. Please keep in mind that it is illegal to enter US as a visitor with the intention of seeking permanent residency.
