Thousands of medical doctors are earning nurse diplomas in order to go to US with their GCs, so they can pursue licensing as physicians. In the Philippines literally thousands of doctors immigrate each year, as nurses, after having earned nurse diplomas. In the US many colleges and universities offer the accelerated programs (for medical doctors and others) to earn their BSNs, so they can work as nurses. Unfortunately, there are waiting lists to get into those programs in the US, and especially at the Junior College level to earn the Associate of Arts degree in nursing.

For every medical doctor doing their hospital residencies in the US under a non-immigrant visa, there are another 1000 that are trying to get there. That is my personal observation, but I believe it to be true, having visited most of the Kaplan USMLE centers in India this year. Even those doctors that manage to complete their US residencies under a non-immigrant classification, must still achieve the ultimate obsticle of getting their green cards after completing their residencies.

The St Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Studies (MAPS) offers a 12 month, English language, accelerated MD/Nurse Diploma Program for medical doctors, that qualifies them for the CGFNS and NCLEX-RN exams. Passage of either exam will permit a US Employer to start the I-140 immigration process to bring the doctor to the US with a green card, to intially work as a registered nurses. Once there, the doctor can pursue ECFMG requirements to become certified, and can accept any residency he or she can obtain because they have their green card. The MD/Nurse Program presents a viable alternative to those doctors who after having completed USMLE Steps 1 & 2 in their home countries, are denied a visa to take the CSA, that essentially cuts short their aspirations of becoming licensed in the US as physician.

The MAPS program has been officially considered, evaluated and approved by CGFNS Credentials Committee, and doctors that completed the program have been licensed as RNs in the US. Information about the program can be found by searching "MAPS md/nurse diploma program". Or, "Practice Medicine in the USA, with a Greencard"

FMG from several countries, mainly India, have completed or are completing the program, and FMGs residing in the US with their GCs but unlicensed, have completed the program, then returned to the US to work as nurses as they pursue necessary steps to earn ECFMG certification.

For those doctors seeking to obtain their CGs first, then pursue medical licensing once in the US (earning a good salary), the MD/Nurse Diploma through MAPS offers a viable solution. MAPS is a leading postgraduate medical academy with a distinquished history.

The MD/Nurse program was designed for medical doctors, and doctors that consider this route to US hospital residency, can be assued that the program is fully approved by CGFNS for their Certification Program. And that information can be verified independently.

Ridiculous!!!
There are alternative methods that can add to your professional development at a physician,
MPH, MBA, MS, PhD to name a few.
In the end its not only about GC. Yes certain family med and community programs will entirely depend on GC but not so in bigger centers where the real action is. In the end its not only about being here for money. This is an amazing country which is without doubt the best in the world. I pray that unscrupulous methods like the one you mentioned doesnt spoil it for bright budding doctors in the future.

If you come here as a nurse you have to remain a nurse. Its a breach of trust if you use it as an entry into the country with other intensions.

This is another example of "bending" the rules. USCIS must make a list of all such methods and deal with it one at a time. I wonder if they track this site.......
