URGENT - Maximum Time a GC Holder out of USA

Hello all,
I am a GC Holder(Got approved in 2001). I am planning to go to India for about 10 months stay. Is there a time limit on enterning back to US for GC holders? I heard from someone that usually it is 6 months. Do I have to come back in 6 months If I were to maintain my GC Status? but If I want to stay for 9-10 months do I have to take any permission from the INS?

A couple of my GC friends went back to India recently. The idea is 'for good', but could come bacl if things don't work out.
I heard that you could work outside for 2 years and file some paperwork to keep your GC status and taxes valid.
I suggest getting a proper advice from a immg lawyer.
 
yes, I read that If you have to stay for, say 2 years you need to apply for some Re-Entry Permit.
But I am still not sure whether the same applies for poeple who stay between 6 Months to 1 Year away from US.

Any Ideas?
