Marrying to GC holder while in US on L1

Hi,
I want to know what will be the steps and time lines for obtaining a GC if one gets married to a GC holder being in US with legal status on work permit.

Thanks

Being in the US as a guest worker or visitor gives an applicant no advantage timewise over an applicant outside the US. Each must get at the end of the line and wait for a visa to become available. It is quite possible that a guest worker or visitor will be required to exit the US and wait abroad for their GC to be granted.

The L1 does provide somewhat of an advantage in that it allows immigrant intent, so the L1 holder can exit and reenter the US and file for adjustment of status without the fact of being married to a USC causing problems at the port of entry. And the L1 visa allows exiting and reentering the US while the AOS is pending, without needing Advance Parole.

I appreciate your responses.
The USC has had a GC for 2 years now. The L1 holder has had the L1 for 1 yr now. L1 holder can stay on L1 for next 2 years and then go for an extension as well.

What is the typical time line for receiving a GC once the application is filed by the spouce ?

I suppose you meant the LPR has had a GC for 2 years?

Normally for spouses of permanent residents there is a 4-5 year wait, but recently that has dropped to about 2 years. However, such fast movement is often short-lived, and I would expect it to drop back to the usual 4-5 year time frame.

Fortunately there is enough time left on the L1 (including potential extensions) that the LPR can become a citizen long before the L1 is exhausted.
