Married to US citizen living abroad

Hello everybody:

My husband is an American born citizen who has been livi in Chile for almost 9 years. We met 5 years ago and got married last March 14th here in Chile.
We are planning to move back to the U.S. next year hopefully.
I wanted to know when would be the right time to start my green card process. Do we have to get married there (we only had a symbolic ceremony in Michigan) ?
What is the most practical option?

According to the embassy in Santiago the process is taking 2-4 months: http://chile.usembassy.gov/immigrant_visas.html

You can also email them for a recommendation on when to apply depending on when you intend to immigrate.

Your marriage in Chile should be enough provided it was a civil marriage. Check the instructions.
