Married TN holders - pondering GC options

Now that my TN is extended, I can think about things more long term again - my wife and I (me, engineer, her nurse) have been talking about whether we would like to become more than temporary visitors to the US. We both have TNs through our individual work, and I have found some info on a married couple where one has a GC already.

I am looking for advice or opinions on how we may want to approach the GC deal, with the goal of us both having one. I will be looking at cost as well as just the feasibility (I may have some ability to have my work cover some or all of the costs, where she can get sponsorship, but no financial assistance, from her employer).

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Dale.

It is very difficult to live in US long-term on TN. You need to point out to your employer that the simplicity of TN was an advantgae to THEM, not you, and that now it is time to show YOU some consideration.

Unless you are just planning to flit from job to job, I would consider it an insult if the company did not offer GC (at least sponsorship if not fully paying for it) after about a year.

You only need one sponsor of course, so approach them both. As long as one sez yes, your good to go. If they both do, even better.

Your employer not willing to sponsor and pay for GC is like a firm asking you to supply your own computer or your own health coverage.

Thanks Nelson. I appreciate the thoughts. I am new at the GC thing, I came down knowing that a TN was good for the shorter term, and we decided to jump and do the other research later once we knew where we stood after a year or two, so my understanding of the GC process is limited right now. Am I correct in understanding that only one sponsor is needed for GC in my case, and the other can obtain a gc through a spousal applicatioon? Any ideas on timeframe? I assume the whole process would take on the order of 7 years. Is this a fair guess?

Regards,
Dale.

The employer sponsors the worker and the worker sponsors the spouse and kids.

To estimate how long the process will take is nailing jello.

It used to take 18 months, some have strted 6 years ago, and some are getting GCs that started the process last summer.

But, like 6/49, you can't get GC without getting in the game.
