I just got married to a woman that is a canadian citizen. She came here on vacation using her passport and we decided to get married. Now im not sure what to do. She wants to stay with me in the US but at the border they made her pay for a card that says she needs to be back by march 31 2006. I know i need to file an i-130 and she needs to file a 1-485. Can she stay here while they are being processed or will she need to go back to canada. I was thinking about getting an attorney but the one i talked to said it would be $2000 plus filing fees and I dont have that kind of money right now. Is that average for an immigration attorney? Any help you can give me on getting started would be great.

Are you US citizen? If yes, your wife's overstay will be forgiven IF SHE ENTERED US LEGALLY. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

Personally I did hire an attorney but after all these processes, I realized that they were not as complicated as we thought. FYI, I spent $500 to have them completed the application forms & another $500 to have our attorney to attend the interview with us. (I live in Southern California, don't know if the market rates would be a big difference in different areas)

What we filed: I-130, I-864 (also have my aunt as cosponsor), I-485, I-765

If you're an US citizen the answer "pricesskate" gave you is what you're looking for.
If you spend enough time in this forum you'll find all the giudance you need to prepare the forms yourself without a lawyer.
