Marriage this summer; apart in the fall

Hi,

I am a Canadian citizen and my boyfriend is an American citizen. We would like to marry in Ontario at the beginning of the summer and have him living here in Canada with me. In the fall he will be working in Michigan and I will be staying in Ontario while I finish my degree.

Is there going to be any trouble with him staying with me for 3 months here, or is he just considered a visitor because he's staying less than 6 months?

When I go to visit him during the year on weekends in MI, will they give me trouble at the border thinking I'm not going to come back? Should I bring documentation with me every time I visit to show I am a full time student and also employed in Ontario?

Thanks for any help.

Hello,
I am in the EXACT same situation. My boyfriend lives in PA and we're getting married this summer in Ontario as well (I'm also finishing my degree haha.)

Do you know if there will be any trouble with getting the marriage liscense? I'm pretty sure he can just come to Canada and get married but I want to know if we're gonna hit any snags.

I wanted to know about problems visiting as well. He is going to have to go back to PA after we marry since he won't be able to work here right away (right? until he gets approved?) so visits will be necessary.

Sorry I was no help to your questions...it's pretty crazy that the first time I come to these forums I come across a girl in the exact same situation as mine! Good luck to you, hopefully these nice people give us some answers :)

Hey KatyGee,

Crazy! My situation has changed in that now, soon-to-be-hubby will be working in TEXAS. Yuck. Anyway, I've looked online and found that when you go to the marriage licensing office, they apparently don't ask about your citizenship or residency, just for identification that proves who you say you are, and the forms you're supposed to fill out. I guess they figure if you're IN the country, customs and immigration let you be here, so it's not their business.

I just want to make sure my fiance doesn't come to the border with his car loaded up with stuff and get held up there because they're afraid he's going to marry a Canuck girl and never go back to the States.

Anyway, any help from others on this board?
