Marriage Registration Certificate

I am planning to get married in India. It will be a marriage in front of a marriage register and not a social marriage. Can anybody provide me some details about such marriage procedures specially how long does it take to get the marriage certficate. I believe that for such marriages one has to give a 30 days notice first and then after expiry of 30 days then the marriage takes place in front of a marriage register. Does the marriage register issue the marriage certificate immediately or does one have to wait for the certificate. Clearly all these information I require for my would be spouses H4 visa purposes. Any experiences and information will be much appreciated. Help please. Thanks in advance.

Although it has no link to the immigration forum here, I could just comment that Hindu marriage act in India has possibly two methods of dealing with this situation. The first as you mentioned that you give a notice of 30 days before you go before a marriage registrar and have your marriage solemnised. Usually it takes for the certificate to be issued in 7-10 days. The second case would be to actually have the social marriage and then have it registered with the registrar. This requires all the invitation cards, snap shots and what not. This requires a 10 day (I am not sure) waiting period. There are numerous other ways also to get one too...I hope you understand what I mean..

Debasis,

Are you sure about the fact that it takes 7-10 days to receive a marriage certificate, either by doing a court marriage, or by getting married in a religious manner? I was under the impression that it is issued the same day, at least in the case of a court marriage, and was banking on the fact on my trip to India in February.

As for the "other" ways, can you be more specific - if you don\'t want to post "them" here, you can email me directly at "psehgal@psehgal.com".

Thanks in advance - Prashant.

Are you sure ?

You wanna get married ? Sigh, you gotta quit when you are ahead. But if you insist...

Registrar Office - 30 days notice, marriage vows, two witnesses, marriage certificate same day. This may not work for you unless the notice is filed ahead of time.

Religious Place & Registrar Office (combo deal!) - Get married in temple/ church/ mosque, get certificate/ receipt from priest, go to registrar office, sign, two witnesses, marriage certificate same day.

Get help from a middleman, sorry... lobbyist. The red carpet will be really plush.

Whatever you do get photographs too since it will help with H4. Of course you also can have memories of a happy past.

Debasish, Prashant and GrinNBear,
Thanks to you all. I had the same understanding as GrinNBear has. However, can the procedure vary from place to place ? Debasish I heard the same procedure as you described from someone in Calcutta. May be GrinNBear\'s \'lobby tonic\' is the remedy for such ailments. Prashant you got the message too ? Prashant best of luck for February.

Yes, I should have mentioned that this procedure is specific to calcutta...it vaires from place to place...and the "other" thing I was mentioning has been elaborated by GrinNBear...best of luck...

I got married in Calcutta and got the certificate immediately

It was under Special MArriage Act. We went to the Registrar\'s office (in New Alipore). She had the documents prepared.. all we needed to do was to sign in the right places and after she signed and stamped them, it became our marriage cerificate. We went through the social (Hindu) marriage a week later.
Maybe you need to talk to the registrar in advance to make sure.

Thanks to all guys for all the inputs. I am planning to go to Calcutta also. "Hello" would it be possible to post the New Alipore Registrar\'s contact details - if you do not want to post you may email at pubebangal@yahoo.com.

to oldguy\'s question..

hi oldguy,
You would have collected the info you need by now. But for what it is worth, plan your marriage such that the registrar\'s office knows about your urgent requirement for the marriage certificate. You can get the certificate in one day or the same day as marriage. You must plan accordingly.

As for the question of Tatkal service passport, the consulate cannot reject visa just because it was obtained thru Tatkal service. To obtain PP thru Tatkal, the applicant has to prove to the PP officer his/her urgency, that\'s all.

Hope this helps and good luck.
