Suppose I want to sponsor my spouse for GC based on marriage, how long does it normally take to process I-485 thru marriage?
 
I am sorry, but this category of visas is very backlogged. All you can do is to file an I-130 to get a place in line. You will then have to wait for 5-6 years.
 
The waiting time seems to be longer than obtaining I-485 thru asylum then. I thought asylee I-485 is the longest one to get but marriage based I-485 is just as bad. How about filing thru US Embassies overseas etc?
 
It has nothing to do with location. The problem is there are more people who want such visas than the quotas allocated by law. You have to wait 5-6 years, period (unless they change the law).
