Can anybody tell me whether court marriage or registering with Registar is compulsory to get H4 visa? I am planning traditional marriage in Kerala which registers with our community's society. They issue marriage ceritificate. Is this certificate good enough to attach with H4 documents or law insists for court marriage?

Please advice... I am hearing different opinion from different people.. totally confused.

Thanks,

VJ

Hi uvmenon,

Though I don't have an answer,I have couple of questions for you.

Do you know how long it is taking for H4 visa stamp in India(i.e Chennai consulate) from the time you apply till you receive it?

Also,do you have any idea, after the marriage husband's name must be included in wife's passport. Is it required at Chennai consulate? If so, how long this process takes time?

I appreciate your input.

Thanks

I heard it take 7 - 14 days for H4. In some cases it comes in 5 days too.
I heard Chennai counsulte doesn't insist to endorse or change name in passport.

Thanks for your reply.

I heard different stories recently.Couple of my friends, who married recently, reported that husband's name must be included in wife's passport and the whole process is taking more than 20 days, including wife's new passport work.

They mentioned that they couldn't complete all the processing work with in their 2 weeks vacation period and came back to US without bringing their wives.

Thanks

I think Mumbai counsulate insist for name change in passport. See the following document Chennai counsulate send me..

"It is not mandatory for H4/L2 visa applicants to have the surname/name of the spouse entered in their passport when they apply for a visa at American Consulate, Chennai."

Thanks,

your local village officer is the right person to answer this. All marriage certificates have to be given by local authorities: Panchayat, municipality etc... If your society is authorized to give a marriage certificate and the local governing body will accept that then no problem.
