Maintaining residence after filing N400

Due to family reason, I have to spend a fair bit of time in Canada to be with family after filing for my N400. I tried to come back to the states at least once a month. What's the requirement in terms of maintaining residence for after filing N400? Will prolonged stay (say more than half the time between when I filed 'til when I interviewed, but no more than 6 months at a time) affect the application in any way?

Simply put you need to demonstrate you are residing in the US. Comming back to visit every month for a short time does not demonstrate that.

Some IO's have been ok with people being away for extended times taking care of sick relatives as long as there's a lot of proof that there really is someone sick and you are in fact taking care of them.

The maintaining residence is from when you got your Green Card, not just after the N-400. So all that time from your original PR date to the Interview and to the Oath date is all taken into account...

Yes that helps, along with anything that can prove that you knew in advance you were only going away for a temporary period of time.
