Maintaining GC while working from offshore

All,

I am a permanent resident since 08/31/07. I've been in the U.S. for over 10 years.

I intend to relocate to Offshore (INDIA) because I would like to be close to my aging ailing parents.

But at the same time I would not like to lose the hard earned GC.
Kind of "have my cake and eat it too" situation.

I understand from the forum postings that one has to complete atleast 6 months in an year to maintain the validity of GC.

I would like to explore possibilities and available options.

Would appreciate your thoughts or advise if there's any ongoing thread exchanging similar views.

Thank you.

If it really was hard earned, don't you owe yourself the luxury of finally enjoying it? A few USCIS-free years will do you good :) You can theoretically spend six months in the US and six months in India. However it can get complicated and expensive. Taxation, primary residency and other factors that need to be carefully monitored in order to keep your GC valid. Not worth it in my opinion, but you make your own call.

But at the same time I would not like to lose the hard earned GC.

There is also a possibility of going on an extended temporary trip using reentry permit. It allows you to be out of the US for 2 years. But if you are really out of the US for 2 years - you will break continiuous reqt for citizenship.

This might be bogus advice. Use at your own risk. I am a layman.

Since youve been a GC holder for 10 years, are you not eligible for citizenship? This would solve the problem of any abandonment issues.
