Maintaining GC status while studying abroad

Hello All,

We have GCs. I want to send my son abroad for studies. He will have to be there about 4 to 6 years. How can he maintain the Perm Resident status and not lose his GC?

Thanks for your suggestions.
 
Doing it for 2 years was hard enough. He'll need to keep applying for re-entry permits, which has to be done in the US. And, after the first one, there's no guarantee he'll be issued with more, especially for the whole 2 years. I don't suggest this course of action.
 
If he wants to stay abroad that long, he should obtain US citizenship first, which will enable him to stay outside the US as long as he wants without having problems returning to the US.
