Maintaining Continuous Residency by a short visit to the USA

I have had my green card since 7/2008 and have been physically present for over 30 months since i received my GC. However, I am planning to be away in the UK from September 2012 until July 2013. If I returned to the USA for a short period within the 10 months that I plan to be away (e.g. return for 2 weeks in February 2013) would my continuous residency be disrupted? (In July 2013 I will be returning to the USA permanently to pursue my PhD--an 8-10 year study path).

If you take a short trip back to the US like that, your chances of approval are definitely better than if you spent the whole consecutive stretch of more than 6 months abroad, but you're still at some risk of denial.

To improve your changes some more, don't apply immediately when you return in July 2013, because people who apply immediately after returning from a long trip abroad are viewed less favorably. Wait a few more months in the US and then apply in late 2013 (or in 2014).

Thanks so much for the advice. I think I will follow that and only apply after being present in the US for several months.
