We are GC holders and have a kid (US citizen by birth). If we decide to move to India, what would happen to our kid’s citizenship ? Do they have to visit US every ‘once in a while’ to continue US citizenship ? Is it possible to renew their passports in India ?

Would appreciate if someone point me to the law/thread pertaining to this.

Thanks.

A US citizen can stay in India as long as they want. No need to visit USA. U.S citizen can reniew their passport in India.

US citizenship is not lost by staying outside the US for a long time. But green cards can be lost for that reason.

However, the US citizen living outside the US still has to file US taxes, or may be arrested at the US port of entry.

It is almost impossible to loose US citizenship granted through birth. About the only method I know if if the person voluntarily renounces their citizenship with full intent of giving it up. Even the act of taking a foreign oath of allegiance is not usually considered sufficient grounds if the holder claims they never intended to stop being a USC.

I have seen many posts here about people going back to India. If you don't mind my asking, is it because of lesser opportunities here/more in India, the sinking US dollar (and hence relatively higher standards overseas)?

In my own case I immigrated from Australia in 2001, when the US dollar was 50 cents Australian. Now a US dollar is worth 91 cents Australian (effectively USD is 90% less worth now!). I guess the Indian Rupee along with the Euro and other currencies too must have seen the affects of the sinking US Dollar.

The tragedy in all this is that the US congress is continuing to spend as if there will never be a day to payback all this debt - we borrow $US 3 billion a day to fund our current account deficit.

You must mean the other way around ... the Australian dollar was worth 50 US cents, now it is worth 91 US cents.

Us citizens and permanent residents both need to file an annual return if living abroad. However I am pretty sure they will not be arrested at a POE for not doing so.

I recently read an article about dual US/Canadian citizens living in Canada who never filed US taxes in their life and ran into trouble at the border. They were born in the US to Canadian parents, then grew up in Canada and often never knew they had to file US taxes (having obtained both citizenships without going through a lengthy legal process, and having not lived in the US, it is not surprising that they would be unaware of a US regulation that affects them). I'll try to find it later.
