Re: Good Stuff

Like whiskey doesn't add to your calories?? Dude! Drink once or twice a week if you have to. Abstinance is difficult to achieve but you may find it easier to control the amount and frequency.

Few more tips

If you really have to drink and you consider wine amongst it, drink red wine (a glass or two) which is good for your heart.

At the least initially, keep a manual and take note of your daily intake and exercise. This will help you the amount of calories you feed on and the amount you are trying to burn. After a while, you will know approximately how many calories your food contains based on the dishes.

If you can, get a friend or partner to hit the gym along with you. It will motivate you to push yourself a little bit further (Ah, that ego!).

Don't over exercise. You will never be able to maintain the regimen and also potentially injure yourself.

And a key thing, have a physical check up with a doctor before you proceed further. If you have any complications, you can follow a diet/exercise geared to it instead of just reducing your diet and having a surprise/shock later. E.g. if high choesterol, you can try to improve certain aspects regarding it (increase HDL/lower LDL) by diet, etc.

Good Luck.

My story..

After working in IT for 4 years, I too did realize and wonder why almost every day people eat chicken wings, pizza, cheese, ice cream, cakes, and more cakes at work. Every time I suggested something healthier for lunch, my colleagues insisted on the fatty stuff.

Anyways I also have a cholesterol problem so in my case my diet changed drastically. But the important thing is to be persistent, very persistent. I don't think of it as "lowering the cholesterol and then I'm done" or "losing weight" but to completely go to a new level of fitness and STAY THERE. So I view all the diet and excercise changes I made as PERMANENT. Healthy and better life, after all, is better than having to take pills permanently.

Usually I can't make time for a good breakfast, so I substitute oatmeel (plus flaxseed, low-fat milk), granola bar and orange juice. I always try to eat a big lunch instead of a big dinner, and I made it a rule to NEVER put anything besides water in my mouth for three hours before bedtime. This has helped, I can sleep better, and wake up hungrier and more rested.

I eat almost everything (except almost no eggs, full-fat cheese, full-fat milk, full-fat red meat), and drink lots of water, but I have to remind you that the body tries to be at equilibrium. If you eat less, BE PERSISTENT, and after a while (a few months) your body will indeed get used to your new diet and you WILL feel less hungry. I've gotten so used to it that my stomach actually feels bad after I eat very fatty foods. I religiously check the saturated fat content and percentage on everything I eat, and I don't eat it if it has >10% saturated fat in one serving, or >10% cholesterol.

During the day, instead of soft drinks or coffee or black tea, I drink lots of water (I had to force myself at first) and sugarless green tea (helps with digestion and has lots of other advantages). It took some getting used to. I avoid snacks and think "I'd rather eat more of my nice dinner later".

I work out 4 days a week, with 3 sessions cardio and 3 sessions weights, obviously overlapping. I will probably increase my cardio to 4 days a week. For cardio, I bought one of those Heart Rate Monitors, which transmits a signal to its wristwatch and also to the gym equipment. Initially I used to just go on the treadmill and get tired and kill myself for nothing, but now I can precisely adjust the cardio so that my heartrate is really in the range it is supposed to be in. And I always work out for >30 minutes, a personal trainer told me that the first 20 minutes the body is just fighting you, and after that is when the real fat burning / cardio benefits start. I cannot stress the importance of water enough, as water is used in the fat burning process (chemical / biological). I drink 1 Liter of water or gatorade during a 1 hour workout. Following the cardio, I work out with weights for half hour or 45 minutes. Of course, stretching is very important before AND after the whole workout process.

I would also recommend going to the American Heart Association's website which lists specific "good" and "bad" foods, even by cuisine type, if you eat out a lot. No matter what your health condition is right now, you should make it a point to eat healthy (low cholesterol, low saturated fat, lots of fibers, fresh fruits / veggies, balanced diet).

My cholesterol dropped 100 points in one year. I feel much more fit and healthy. My size dropped from 33 to 30, and my overall shape improved significantly. I lost fat (which was accumulating in my stomach and butt) and increased muscle mass (which makes me look more manly), and also improved my sitting / standing posture somewhat.

I think that being persistent in whatever you do is the most important, because you don't just want to be slim/fit/healthy today, you want to continue to be slim/fit/healthy for the rest of your life!

Treadmill Workout

Hi All:

I tried to use treadmill, which worked very well for me.

I lost about 20 lbs in 2-3 months. I was 175 lbs to begin with. Weight reduction was not my goal but reducing cholesterol, which was abnormally high of 380, now is close to 200 – which is just about normal. It went high because of wrong eating habits too much carbs & sugar.

Having a treadmill made it very easy for me, I can do it whenever I want at home. Besides everyone at home can use it.

If you are planning on treadmill, get a good one. The motor ratings are specified in either treadmill duty (incorrect way of specification. e.g Proform) or in continuous duty (accurate way to specify the rating). Get one has at least 1½ HP motor and comes with a good warranty. I got Nordic track & satisfied with it. Also, a *** long and wide *** running belt is a very good idea. Running or brisk walking on short and narrow track is difficult. treadmill. I think all have power incline and some electronics. A lot of treadmills are iFit compatible (for more info, http://www.ifit.com). I do not use it but does not mean that you wont.

Most important:

* Initially, it can be difficult but try to use it for 30-60 minutes and 5 days a week (never 7 days a week)
* Use it at a speed which suits you, getting 30-60 minutes is important.
* Use it at an incline (7degrees or more) & if you prefer use some dumbbells while one treadmill to get a much better workout.
* Never increase your workout more than 10% every week.
* When you are not well or injured, skip it.
* Drink lot of fluids before, during and after. (I prefer, Diet Ice Tea about 32 ounces)
* Diet is important. There are a lot of tips in this thread.

All the best in your fitness and GC goals. Hope this freeze is over soon.

Happy Holidays and a Happy new year.. :-)

Cru.
