Lost Green Card - Travelling to Canada nexty Friday

Hello All:

My wife, child and myself are driving to Canada and then onto NY (Buffallo and Rochester this coming w/e) for the T'giving break.
This evening my wife has just noticed that she cannot find her Green Card. The last time we used this was to refinance our mortgage on Sept 20, 2002. So we don't know where exactly it was misplaced. We are driving through the Detroit/Windsor entry points both ways. I have copies of all the relevant passport documents and green card(s). What could we encounter on our way out/back given that one person in the group does not have the physical green card?

Thanks a lot for any responses and advice that you may have to give me.

How do I go about getting the I-551 stamp? Will this be given upon request or is there a fee for this? Can I request for this at the same time my wife files for a replacement card?

Thanks again for the insights. Thankfully though, I won't have to go through the frustration of dealing with the bureaucracy at the INS because my wife found her (hitherto) lost green card. It was under the driver's seat (on the floor) of her car. Now I wonder how it got there Hmmmmmm......
