Loss of RTD or RP while abroad

Hi,

I thought it would be wise to start a thread where people can share their experience with lost RTDs or RPs while abroad. I didn't lose mine recently, but USCIS had it, and I was stuck abroad with no options.

Nobody has any experience? It scares me that if I were to lose my RP outside the US, I would have no options. Or, could I apply for an RTD from outside the country due to extenuating circumstances?

You could get a NP from your COP consulate. With RP & RTD requiring FPs, I doubt you could file from out of country....unless the U.S embassy would take your fingerprints for submission.

How about we all try not to lose RP Or RTD or GC..its just a headache..

Well, if you lose it, it's not like you have to apply for a NEW one, just a replacement of some sort. So I don't think you would have to go through FP and all that stuff. Not sure how it works, but I think it would be wise to contact the nearest US consulate for advise. Another option is to have the USCIS phone number on hand, and give them a jingle.

Of course, the best option of all is to NOT lose your RTD/RP. Guard it with your lives, folks :D

Going to Europe in March. This thread made me kinda worried :)

there is no need to worry, in case you lose your travel document, you go to
nearest american consulate general, they will give you permission to come back to america, it is not really big deal,

my friend lost his green card in france 4 years ago, he went to the embassy
in paris and got some official papers allowed him to come back to usa,

some members on this forum are getting hesterical and paranoid about losing
travel document,

come on guys its is not the end of the world, its not like you are losing
billions in the stock market,

another thing you can do guys, call the MESSIAH OBAMA, HE IS TURNING
WATER TO WINE AND THE SEA TO GOLD
billions

ITs not ppl are panicking or scaring ppl..its just ppl who dont have a passport and have RP to travel..its hard for them. Losing a GC happens and U.S embassy is trained to handle that...however ppl who dont have a NP..its hard for them..so read it carefuly Mr SMITH!!

want, what difference it makes if you have np or not?

You still need to report to us embassy if you lose your travel document, and they will help you, they will know when they look at your immigration record that you had travel document when you departed the usa ,
they will help you to come back to the us, as long as you have legal status in the us, there is no worry

Nobody's being paranoid or scared. All that people are trying to do is trying to find a solution in a "what if I lost my RTD" situation.

Actually, I had sent my document to USCIS when I was abroad, because they had to fix an error. In the meantime, I went to the US consulate in Amsterdam, and asked them what they could do for me if USCIS didn't send it to me by the time I needed to travel back, and they said they could do NOTHING for me regarding travel documents. I asked them so many questions, and mentioned stuff I had heard on this forum, and they said that I could only deal DIRECTLY with USCIS, or CBP. Either way, they said the State Department couldn't do anything for cases except for when a GC is lost. This is why I started this thread, because I was freaking out, and you know how it is dealing with USCIS even when you explain to them in a daily fax that YOU HAVE NO DOCUMENT WITH WHICH TO TRAVEL except for the one that they have in their possession and won't send on time. Only after intervention from my senator AND congressman did they come through. I hate them.

read cafeconleche's post above...U.S embassy wont help you if you lost your travel document. If you lose a GC, its a different story.

It's possible to enter the US without a travel document, but being allowed to leave the foreign country is the issue, not to mention the airline's objections, and transiting countries. So far, it looks like if you lose your travel document, you're in for a messy ordeal.

Thats why I renewed my NP. I travel at least once every 2 months out of country and being scared like that ruins the trip for you. I carry a NP & RP with me.

Last time I entered U.S on Jan 6, I gave my NP but the officer asked if I also had a RP..to which I said yes..and he asked to see it..to which I showed him. He stamped my NP and let me go. The reason he asked for RP was because once long time ago when they took away my RTD..its written in the system as LOST...so thats why!!
