I am not sure

I think I filed my 485 within a month. depends on the guildline of INS, if it is less than 3 months or something, then you might expecting the same thing. if it is for less than a month, then you will be OK.

I was told it is an automatic interview if it is "close"

reasons for transfer

There are three major reasons for local interview,

One is marriage
Second is questionable issues such as you answered you have criminal offense in your application. (bar fight and was arrested for one night, etc)
Third is random

In some other center, they actually do it systematically to lighten the work load of center INS, Like in NJ area.
