Living outside US while on Permanent Resident status

May I live and work outside of the US while remaining a permanent resident? If so, for how long can I stay outside before being required to 'check in', and how often do I have to 'check in'? Also, during those 'check in' periods, how long am I required to stay before returning to the country where I would live and work?
Do I have to file tax returns while living and working outside the US?
And, when the time comes for applying for US citizenship, would this affect my application then? If so, how so?
 
By applying for a reentry permit ( form I131, there is a fee ), you can protect your GC for up to 2 years (if that's the first you apply for ) : it will protect your LPR status if you want to live and/or work outside the US.

However, it won't protect the continuous residency ( time counted toward citizenship = N400).
The only way to protect it is to be eligible for the N470. However, most people are not, as it requires that the person stayed in the US for an entire year, without any absences whatsoever.

All trips of more than a year will make you loose your GC, if you did not apply for the I131 before leaving.

All trips for more than a year will break the continuous residency requirement for citizenship, unless you have an apporved N470.

For trips between 6m and 1year, the burden is on YOU to prove that you did not break the continuous residency ( if you do not have a N470 ). Proofs are strong ties to the US: fed tax returns filed as resident, bills, active bank accounts, ....

For trips < 6m, you are supposed to be fine for both ( GC and continuous residency for citizenship)
However, don't think you can fly to the US every 6m to preserve your GC. It used to be enough, some people got awya with it a few years back.
However, NOW, it is VERY VERY risky.
