Hey everyone, i'm from Asia, now a student. My family have became the winner of DV 2008. i have my concern about how we will start our life in America once we got there, i have no idea . Plz help me with this and share your ideas.

Well, currently we're waiting for our 2nd letter, assuming we will have the interview around april . Beyond that, when i get to USA, once i have my visa and everything, How could we start life in there?
I don't have any relatives, or friends in the USA. SO there's not a helpful person that can help us to start a life, find a job and go to school etc.
So plz any of you share your ideas and experiences of how you started life in the USA.

What is the best place to live in the usa?
Are we suppposed to plan everything ahead, before we come to USA? or not
Am i supposed to find colleges or universities and apply for college from here?
Should we find our job searching online, or not?
i don't have precise ideas, appreciate if you give us your experiences,

Congratulations on the win.
Its hard to say for sure what parts of the states is better to live. It really depends on what kind of lifestyle, weather and job that u are looking for.

Yes, u do need to plan ahead before you come here. U guys need to atleast find a friend or someone that would let y'all stay with them for atleast 3-4wks before y'all can find an apartment/job. And again, make sure that your family has atleast enough money to put roof over ur heads and for food for the first 3 months that y'all get her.

yes, don't worry about colleges until you get here. Unless u already know of a college u want to go to, ur family might wanna think about moving to that town with you.

thnx for the reply Johnkent,
we're trying to connect to the friend we have, but we couldn't, yeah, just hoping that we get hold of them, so can't we start our own life without them friends? is it much hard?
we're thinking of finding an apartment, and job online lately and surfing over the internet ,. Is the internet reliable? or not?

Also if you all can give any more precise ideas , that'd be really helpful,

Thanks a lot, best wishes for you all

It will be hard to get an apartment online as u guys are not in the US yet. A Credit check is usually done at most apartment complexes and u guys dont have any at this time. U really should figure out who u guys can stay with for a few wks so that u can atleast figure out how to get around and also look for apartments and jobs. I don't trust anything on the Internet until i see it with my eyes. u might pay for an apartment online and then might be very dissappointed to know that its in a ghetto neighbourhood when u get here.

a lot of people immigrate to the US without any friends and/or relatives. Some make it, some don't - but it doesn't depend on whether you have somebody willing to help or not. Having somebody helpful just makes the adaptation period easier.

English is a big plus, and you seem to know it.

Do you plan to continue your studies? If so, you could look into universities or colleges that offer courses in your field as a starting point. You really have no idea where you want to go at all? I really don't know what else to say, in the end you have to figure out what it is you aim to accomplish and then base your plans on that. In any case, good luck!

thanks all for the responses,
yes i'm going to continue my study, i'm confused about applying to college from here,
anyone studying in USA with a green card visa? i heard green card holders get to pay as same as the Residential tuition fee (in state) for colleges, and they could get funds just like the normal US student, is that right? so, at this time, i haven't yet got my green card, and how do i apply for college? they will consider me as i'm an international student, at the moment.
right?

and also. do you guys know any good, reliable website that i can search for jobs? and also find apartments?

U will be considered international student at the moment. In some states, u must be a resident of that state for atleast a yr before you can qualify for in-state tuition or you might have to pay out of state tuition which sometimes, is somewhat less than International tuition.
I would wait until i get here before i apply to colleges. U should be looking up colleges online and getting as much info as u can so that u would be ready to apply when u get here.
