Link b/w GC and passport

To JoeF and other knowledgeable board members:

Would greatly appreciate your input on this sort of confusing scenario:

I applied for my GC while on a Pakistani passport - obtained an immigrant visa on my Pakistani passport and entered the U.S. on this visa. Initial PR stamp (processed for I551....) was on Pakistani passport.

Question is as follows: Based on earlier PR status in Canada, I will be obtaining Canadian citizenship and Canadian passport. If I leave the U.S. and enter a third country (say some European country) do I need to carry my Pakistani passport with me? Or can I carry just my Canadian passport and Green card?

On a similar note, when I re-enter the U.S., can I attempt to re-enter solely with Canadian passport and GC? Upon inspection of my GC, will the immigration officer have a record that I obtained GC while on a Pakistani passport? Will this make him inquire as to why I am not travelling on my Pakistani passport? Or conversely is there NO link between your GC and your passport (in other words U.S. immigration officials don't care what passport you are using as long as your GC is legitimate).

Thanks very much for the input!

I have always wondered.....

What exaclty can the INS Inspector see on his computer at the Port of Entry?

I am a citizen of the European Union. It appears that entering the EU is not as big of a deal. The INS is certainly trying their best to keep unwanted people out. I think they are pretty good at it.

If you have several passports, you can choose which one to use (except if you travel to one of the countries of your citizenship, they may require you to use a particular passport.)

Isn't it mandatory to handover the passport to the home country when a person becomes a citizen to other? I know for India, that the passport becomes invalid, if the indian national takes another country's citizenship. Maybe other countries have different rules.

Actually, you don't need a passport to enter the US. The GC is enough by law (8CFR 211.1, 8CFR 211.2.)

Interesting. But at the POE, I think the officer stamps the entered date and for GC holder they write either A# or somthing and without the passport how can they keep the records in the person's passport?

That depends.
India does not allow dual citizenship. Other countries don't care. I personally know a person with 3 citizenships and 3 passports: US (father is US citizen), Spain (mother is Spanish citizen), French (the person was born in France.)
They sometimes do that, but not always. And if you don't present a passport, they obviously can't.

Thank you.
