Letter of Exceptional Need to extend J-1

I have submitted several requests with all documents to Indian embassy in DC for the 'letter of exceptional need' from the ambassador's office in order to extend my J-1 by a year(into my 8th year) to complete my fellowship training.So far,it'seen more than 2 months and there is no response and they are inaccesible by phone.What do I do next?I'm planning to go to DC in person,but will it help?I'm worried.

I am following up to see if you were able to get the letter of exceptional need from DC and if you were able to extend your visa to finish fellowship I am in similar situation and any help is highly appreciated. Thanks
