Hi everyone,

Please throw some light on following issue.

I have to send in a letter to my employer from my school saying that I have completed/met all the requirements to earn a Masters degree from my school; so that my employer can go ahead and apply for my H1B under masters quota.

My questions is that: Does this letter have to be :

-> From University signed by Graduate Dean or someone in his office or so.

*OR*

--> Can it be a letter from my Deapartment (School of Engineering and Computer Science) which will be signed by Head of the Department or Graduate Program Secratary who is like next position to department head???

Does anyone have any idea about it? Has anyone got it signed by department and it worked????? If yes, what was mentioned on the letter. Please give in your inputs.

Thank you in advance.

Best Regards.

Hi Leo,
I'm about to go through the same process too. My defense is next week and I plan to get the letter from the univ. Will keep you updated. I presume it has to be from the registar.

I read in another thread that ur opt expires next aug so there would be a gap. I'm in pretty much the same situation too...bummer...all the best

Hi Cartman,

Thanks for the reply.

My OPT expires next August thats correct. But, I will be filing for H1 this year and just making sure that everything reaches on time and no discrepancies. Our registrar's office can't issue a letter saying that I have graduated. It just says I have gotten this grade until they hear this from Dean's office which takes another 1-2 months. Dormant scum !!

Anyway, so to expediate everything, I just want to make sure what USCIS might accept. All they need to see is that student has graduated, met all the requirements needed to earn a Masters degree. My department as well as Graduate Dean's office can cerifty that. But, Dean's office will wait until August begining for grades to come out and Department can do it in mid July too because I will actually be graded by then.

So, please tell me which one is Valid/accepted by USCIS????

Please give some more suggestions? Experiences? Views.

Looking forward to hear from all of the viewers of this thread.

Thank you.

Best Regards.

I used letter from my department and it worked but it must have exact dates of completion for USCIS.

Hi papeeta1,

Thank you for replying !!

I am getting a letter from department on time for sure. So, you mean they need the exact date I finish my masters on, as "2" in eg. August "2", 2006? Day anyone finishes up the masters is got to be commencement date which for me is August 5,2006. I will get this letter 10-15 days before that. Department can definitely say July or August,2006 but I doubt if they will/can mention exact dates. Letter might reach them before that date arrives too lol. That would be disasterous !!

What did your letter have? Date/month/year or just Month and year?

But, your reply helped a lot. Thank you very much.

Anyone else who sent letter by department??? and it worked or did not work? Just trying to collect more statistics before getting the letter.

Thank you.

Best Regards.

Hi papeeta1,

Can I use such a letter even if I am applying for H1b under the
Masters quota?

Greatly appreciate your reply.

Thanks
Ramya
