co-sponsor of green card

I am currently a green card holder. A very good friend of mine is applying a green card based on the marriage. (He is married to a US citizen and the wife does not hold a steady job, i.e. no pay stub.) Now they ask me to be the co-sponsor of his application since I hold a steady job. I do want to help them. But I still have questions in my mind to clarify.

Here are my questions:

Why do they need a co-sponsor? I have not heard about it in other people's case. Is that because the wife doesn't hold a job with pay stub?

What are the legal responsibility of being a co-sponsor of a green card application?

The lawyer told me that with my income, I am able to sponsor 3-4 people. Where can I find the guideline of calculating how many people I can sponsor.

In the future, if I do lose the income, would that affect the sponsered person?

Also if I want to sponsor my parents' green card application after I become US citizen, would I be able to do so without a steady job? Or in this case, I can ask my husband who holds a steady job to co-sponsor my parents' cases.

Last question, how does INS keep track of how many people you have sponsored?

I'm planning to sponsor my parents when I become a CZ, and I've been trying to understand the issues you raised myself lately..
My basic understanding is that when you sponsor someone, either as a sole or co-sponsor, is to make sure the person(s) you are sponsoring won't become a public charge. So for instance, if my parents, after they become PRs, happen to use any sort of public aid (though they won't be really eligible, the bills will come back to me. If hypothetically I lose my job, yes, I would need a co-sponsor to sponsor my parents' applications.
