Legacy INS

Got this from Murthy Bulletin. Can you believe this. DHS is worried about folks calling INS as “Former INS” and have asked to be called “Legacy INS”. They are worried about particulars of calling old INS when the new BCIS has done s***. Unbelievable.

"Legacy INS" Proper Term for Prior Agency

In a meeting with members of AILA, the Vermont Service Center (VSC) advised that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has requested that those who must reference the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which was abolished as of March 1, 2003 to refer to it as "Legacy INS." They have indicated that DHS has requested specifically that individuals refrain from referring to the INS as the "Former INS."

We remind readers that the entities that relate to immigration functions and that came into existence on March 1, 2003, are:

- Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS)
- Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and
- Bureau of Customs and Border Patrol (CBP).

The latter two agencies dropped the "B" for "Bureau" from their names and prefer to go by ICE and CBP. It also appears that the DHS has moved forward sufficiently in the transition to request that agencies now be identified by their correct names rather than continuing to refer to all entities as "INS." We advise MURTHYBULLETIN and MurthyDotCom readers, whenever possible, to use the preferred term, "Legacy INS," in reference to the entity that handled immigration matters prior to March 1, 2003.
