Leaving USA without I-94

My extension of B visa application is still pending. Meanwhile I want to leave USA. At the airport I will not have I-94 to give. What is the current procedure these days - do they ask for I-94 and what happens if you do not have one?

Take the proof of INS receipt of your b1 extension. Althought, after new rules, all extensions are to be done in our home country.
