Leaving the US before obtaining the GC

I recently entered the US with an immigrant visa, and I have not received my GC yet. However, because of some urgent cases I have to leave the US before obtaining my green card. Can anyone tell me if I can leave the US or not? If yes, how can I re-enter to the US?

Regards,
John

Did you get an I-551 stamp in your passport? They should have given you that when you first arrived in the US with the immigrant visa. You can use that stamp to reenter the US, provided you reenter before it expires.

Yes, I have I-551 stamp on my passport. So it means that before the expiration date of the stamp I can reenter the US without obtaining a re-entry visa?

Thanks for the answers.

1. I am just wondering if I need some other documents in addition to the stamp at the re-entry port, or the stamp on my passport is enough?

2. How long does it usually take to receive my GC after entering the US?

A1: Once again, passport with I-551 stamp is enough

A2: 4 to 6 weeks, or perhaps a tad earlier
