Hello All,

Seeking your help in understanding the impact of leaving US permamently after attaining the US citizenship, as it relates to :

a) Our kid who will be around 8 years, when we all will become US Citizens (hopefully), and we would like all to return to India then. Will there be any issues if our kid in future wants to come back to US for college and stay here permanently then?

b) I also want to retian the US citizenship (if possible) and have an option to travel/return back to US if required.

c) Are there any impacts on social security benefits, if the US citizen is out of country?.

Appreciate your response.

Once a citizen, always a citizen, unless you commit a crime that causes it it be revoked (or you've done something fraudulent along the way to acquire your citizenship and they discover this...)

Go to http://www.ssa.gov/ and look at their FAQ there I (I've done some of your work for you, check http://www.ssa.gov/international/your_ss.html). Generally you have to have worked 10 years in the U.S. (earned 40 credits) to qualify for retirement benefits in the first place.

a) What you are planning is actually the best of both worlds. Your kid will be exposed to Indian life (even though it is very American now at the upper middle class level). He/she will have no problem getting back here to school and some of the best universities later on.

b) You can retain the US citizenship forever even staying out of the US forever as long as you keep filing fed taxes annually. In fact for India you will need PIO card which is valid fo 15 years.

c) There is no impact on soc security benefits whether you stay in the country or not as long as you complete 10 yrs of paying into the system as another post has stated.

In fact these are exciting times to stay in India for a while. Read this article:

Can be Revoked if u leave!!!!!

I recently read on official web site that if u leave within one year from the date u get ur citizenship it can be revoked. Pls check on that, search on conditions by which citizenship can be revoked u will find it . As best of my knowledge i read it recetly while i was scrolling through other things.

JoeF,
if you could, please, be so kind to give us links to the law.
Otherwise, categorical expressions are not justified.
Unless you can prove you are an immigration God.
