RD: 5/31, ND 8/6, laid-off on 8/31, haven\'t received AP, EAD etc.

Questions:
1. My former mgr wants to rehire me as a contractor(since lay-off doesn\'t allow me to work as a permanent worker until after one year), does this help for my AOS?
2. Anybody filed in May still hasn\'t received the AP?
3. Since it is so hard to find a job at present, the dept dean in my former college suggested me to go back school for my PH.D, can I apply for F visa? My attorney told me F visa is not likely to be approved by INS because I applied immigration already.

Can anybody help on any of my questions? I am so frustrated by my current situation.......really appreciate any help.

About Question#3, if you really plan to switch to F status, you can try third-country visa, meaning you go to American Consulate in Mexico and apply for a brand new F visa. However, it is strongly recommended that you contact an immigrations attorney who has experiences of doing third-country visa and if possible, can accompany you on the trip.
