I NEVER heard that IO is suspicious if you take one.
That's what I've been told from a very good lawyer, but this may be the case only where I'm at though (miami).
And as you mentionned, the lawyer can't really say anything during the interview, you and your spouse are the only one who can answer the questions asked by the officer, so overall it's not very necessary to have a lawyer with you, unless you have a tricky case.
