Please, help me not to waste several thousands dollars and several years of my life!
I'm a PhD candidate, which decided to do the worst thing you could do - get MS degree and quit PhD program. Please, don't blame me, I feel bad on my own already.

My goal is to get a job in industry, green card and raise children happily thereafter.
If anybody knows an experienced lawyer I could consult with, please, refer me to her/him. If anybody did that before - your experience would be so greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!

You made the right decision, don't regret it. Getting a green card after a PhD is way harder - I stuck with the Ph.D and now am a post-doc. Measly money, and virtually no chance of green card in near (read next 2 years) future - on my own. My signature is my husband's contribution - he took your route.

As per lawyer - I am really, really unhappy with ours, so can't recommend.

Thanks for the answer, unsure.
When do you think is the best time to graduate in terms of getting job and H1b? I have 2 options so far: middle December and late March.

What we did was graduate in September. Filed for OPT after graduation, the OPT started end of October and was valid till end of October. My husband started working in March, in April the company filed for H1B with the new quota, the H1B started from October.

If you have job offer before you graduate and the company is willing to start H1B right away, i.e. before you actually work for them for a while, it will not matter that much.

Good Luck

Uh I am not sure about that because my sister got her Phd in 2005 and she is about to obtain her green card, all the paperwork, everything went smoothly. Maybe if you are from India or China you can expect to wait years before you get your green card because the more applicants from your nation the more time you need to wait.
