Last name misspelled in H1 papers ..please advise

My friend is in india and got his h1 papers but his last name is misspelled on it, company is asking him to go for stamping.
Q. Can he go for stamping and come on that visa or does he have to reply.
Is anybody in similar situation

Consulate usually goes by the name in the passport.
