Hi Friends,

This may not be closely related to EAD, but I am posting it here because I am on EAD (using AC21).

I came to US in 2000 and when I went to Social Security office - I had no clue what a last name was. Out of confusion I swapped my last and middle names.

For example - Real name is "First Middle Last"
The one I got on SS - "First Last Middle"

1. First H1 I got in 2000 came with "First Middle Last"
2. Then my employers messed the names too and used "First Last Middle" on some records (not all)
3. My second H1B extension came with "First Last Middle"
4. But my green card uses "First Middle Last" - as it is mentioned in Indian passport
5. Now all my H1s expired (did not renew - used AC21 instead)

Now I am on EAD and I went to DMV for a renewal. DMV denied the application stating that my last name on the passport and my last name SS card does not match (looks like their system automatically checked).

I can not believe that I did not notice this for five years. No one objected for it either.

Now I need to get my SS Card corrected. Will it cause any confusion at consulates, Borders and USCIS? Or can I go ahead and get it corrected?

--------- you dont have to deal with consulates at this time. if your full name is:
RAM KUMAR SHARMA

then your lastname/surname is: Sharma
if on green Card it is : SHRAMA R KUMAR (it is correct)
and your passport should have surname: Sharma name: Ram Kumar (full name RAM KUMAR SHARMA)
Or can I go ahead and get it corrected?
----------get it corrected and should be RAM KUMAR SHARMA on SS Card
once you get your SS Card corrected you may have also to deal with credit cards, IRS, Credit reporting agencies
