Last Name change for Spouse

Me and my wife got I-485 approved just this last week. We are planning to go for stamping tomorrow. My wife wants to get her last name changed to mine. Is it best to do it after getting stamped in passport or before...? If she gets a new passport after stamping, is there a USCIS form to do the name change and get the Plastic Card with the married name.

I was told it is a pretty long process to get the last name changed for the spouse. I suggest you check with your attorney and also some of the Volunteer Moderators here.

Eitherway get it stamped first before you make any changes or who knows you might endure another wait.

Change in Name

I read some where in this forum that , you can ask them to change the spouse last name while stamping. Search for the same.

Actully it's a very easy process to change your spouse name on the passport. (Go to your consulate, its a half day work).
 
Passports Stamped

We got our passports stamped this afternoon. I asked the Immigration Office about Name change for my wife. She asked for the marriage certificate, which I had handy. She took a copy of it and she put the new last name in the form she had for the Plastic Card. Hope that works. Will have to wait and see what goes into the plastic card.
 
just one question for you

on your marriage certificate, did you wife's name have your last name or her maiden name......

did thye just wnat to see proof of marraige or any other documents that show that ur wife had changed her last name

Marriage certificate had her maiden name only. I think she just wanted it for proof of marriage.

Sure. I will update once I get something. I will be getting the name changed in the passport sometime next week.
 
my experience

I talked to the lawyer about my wife's last name change after filing 485. There are two things , one is changing the last name on passport and second is changing last name on the green card/485 petition, lawyer told that it would have been easy If I did before filing 485 and now the whole green card process with different last name including FP check and everything, If I change now it will cause another issue. So finally his suggesion is to change the last name at the time of citizen ship.

Anyhow this is my experience, Please let me know after you get your plastic cards.
BTW did you change your wife's lastname on the passport, before stamping?
