Dear All,

Thankyou so much for your guidance and help. I think this is one of the best forums to share the problems and joys of immigration process with everybody.

I landed in Canada on August 30 through Toronto airport with my family. The whole procedure went real smoothly. The officer at the airport was really nice and all he asked for was proof of funds to which I just showed him my Cashiers check for USD 9000 alongwith the bank statement. He processed the landing papers and asked for an address. I gave him my friends address and he said we will get the PR cards in about 4-6 weeks. The customs officer was also very nice and polite, she asked for my Goods to follow list, entered all those items on a list and handed me a copy of the list. I stayed in toronto for couple of days, applied for my SIN card and came back to US on AP. Again the US side of the process went well.

Now I have a problem, my company is asking me to go to Montreal, Canada for a week on a buisness tripin the end of September. I dont think I will be able to get the PR cards by then, so I am just thinking what my options are at this time. How will I be able to enter Canada again, Should I apply for a visit visa ? or is there any other way ?

Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks

You need to apply for a Travel Document at Canada Consulate in US, close to where you live. The cost is $50, they might ask you why you left before you received you PR Card, you need to give a valid reason specifying the urgency.

I don't think there should be any problem, you have not done anything illegal.

Also, please let us know how it goes.

Best,
Tanvi

Thanks for the reply. I am wondering if I can apply for a visit visa, because my company can do that for me. I dont want to apply for a TD , because that might cause problems at the port of enrty and I dont want to jeopradize this trip because of immigration problems. I guess the question is can I apply for a visit visa?

Hi! Someone1-

You don't need to have visit visa or TD to enter Canada by road being a landed immigrant.
The above are only req if you are flying IN.
Just show your landing doc in which it is printed not valid for travel but between US & Canada by road that will work.

I am in similar situation , but I also have a valid visitor visa ..can i use that to enter canada ..?

hello one and all,

the CIC website clearly states that a landed immigrant needs the PR card to re-enter Canada after December 31st, 2003 ONLY if going into Canada by commercial carrier. This means that you can re-enter Canada without the PR card and using only your landing papers up to December 30, 2003 whether you go by plane, train, bus, car, or boat. HOWEVER, starting on December 31st, 2003, you will need the PR card to re-enter Canada if you enter by commercial carrier - plane, train, bus, boat - BUT NOT if you enter Canada by car, which means that you would have to drive from the U.S. if you want to enter Canada without a PR card on or after December 31st, 2003.
