Laminated birth certificate - a problem?

My wife and me became naturalized US citizens last week. This morning, we went to the post office to apply for ours and our son's US passports.

His Indian birth certificate is in English, but is laminated. The postoffice told us that they can not accept a laminated birth certificate. Of course, taking off lamination is almost impossble without damaging the certificate. His Indian passport specifies his date of birth, place of birth, father's and mother's name. They said even that is not acceptable as a birth certificate.

We are trying to get another copy of birth certificate from India (always a challenge to deal with bureacracy in India).

Any one in similar situation?

faridabadi2: You might try to get to the Indian consulate to certify a copy of the birth certificate and see if that is acceptable to USPS...
