L2 to H1/Greencard

Hi Earthlings,
I am on a L2 visa and my husband is on L1B. We landed here, in USA, some 3 months back and intent to stay here for long. For the same, I have the following doubts:
 1. Can I get sponsered by a company and get my visa transferred to H1 without my husband's company coming into the picture? Can we both be on independent visas, like him on L1B and I on H1 without any problems (keeping in mind that I am at the moment on dependent - L2 visa)?
 2. How can we get a green card? Is there soome minimum time we need to be in USA before we apply? How long does it take?
 Is it better to stay on L2 than get H1, keeping in mind that my husband's stay period is not sure.
Please advice.
Thanks!

You can get H1 and be independent . There is no time needed to apply GC. If any compnay is ready to sponser, you can apply.Once you get H1 , your husband can become dependent(H4) , if he wants. But he cannot work.

1. You can have H1 irrelevant to your husband's status.
you can apply for GC if your company agree to sponsor your GC.
Remember you can only start working on Oct 1 even though H1 is granted now, unless you are qualified for the 20000 quota of US MS degree.
2. Processing time varies.. I saw it 2 years to more than 5 years.
3. It's up to you, if you stay with L2, you can't apply for GC, and you should
be dependent of GC process that your husband applies with his L1B. Good thing with you having H1 is in case your husband is ordered to go back to home by company, he can quit and stay here as your dependent, H4.

Thanks for your inputs. They are helpful.
Until when can I find a sponserer for my H1 in this year's quota? What if I start working on a L2 EAD for now and try to find a H1 sponserer along the way? What if I am able to find a sponserer after October 2005?
