I have the same issue MOXI. I had a petition until 26th Feb 09 and and my Visa stamped in my passport is also until 26th Feb'09 but when I went to India last year and when I came in to the US the Immigration officer gave me the I-94 until July'2011, now I'm totally confused if I could work until 2011 July without extending my petition and Visa or should I do it. In case If I continue to work will that be a problem for my extension later.....I wish someone could get back to us ASAP.
Your L1 needs to be valid in order to legally work and stay in the US. The first L1 should be for three ywears. It can be extended with 3 years and after that for a final 2 years. If I-485 is not filed before the end of the 8 years, you're done.
I've had colleagues in the past-8-year situation and even the largest employers in the country cannot help avoid extradition at that point.

Hi Bharadwaj,MOXI - were you able to get an answer for this?.I have exactly the same issue - my L1 on my passport expires on March 15th and my I-94 has a date of 2011.Also apparently you cant apply for a VISA extension until 6 months before I-94 expires.
It would be great if you could provide any update you might have
