L1 to H1 w/ COS .. delayed change of employement .. please help

I need your expertise on the matter as I am neck deep in the water.

I came to US on L1B for company A in Oct 2005. While in US I applied for H1B through company B with change of status. I got new I-94 stating strt date s dec-5-06. However I changed to company B on May-3-2007.

Is this illegal?

It is that we should switch immediately once we get change of status?

Is there anything I can do now?

When I spoke to an attorney she said I am not illegal as I came thru lawful entry and had petitions/I-94s valid. But she said I could be out of status, but can not say what is my status now :confused:

she told me that I do not have to face 180 day period concept or anything of that sort.

please help
 
I am not an expert. I am in L1 and few consultant offered me H1 without COS, they told that if I apply with COS and can not join new company on the new I-94 specified date I would be in trouble.
