L1 to H1 query

Is it mandatory that if an applicant applies for an L1 to H1 transfer and is approved for H1, he/she needs to leave the L1 company as soon as H1 is approved.

If not, is it acceptable that the candidate works for the L1 company(even after H1 is approved) for a couple of more months - say 3-4 months.

- If you apply for COS, then you have to change to H1b from the date indicated petition notice(usually Oct 1st). But you can still work on L1(legally) by going out of country before Oct 1st and enter on L1b on or after Oct 1st.
- If you donot apply for COS, then when you decide to work on H1, you have to get it stamped outside US.

If I want to work on L1 after Oct 1st, you mention to go out of the country and enter on L1 on or after Oct 1st.
1) I am Indian citizen. Can I go to Canada for that?
2) Would that invalidate my COS H1b?
